“As a first-generation college student, society has given us the social pressure of having to be successful at everything we do to show our worth. We pride ourselves in attaining the dreams and goals our parents set out for us to achieve. Our parents give us the building blocks to succeed, but it is up to us whether or not we want to be successful.”
Damilola came to us with the desire to pursue higher education. She saw college as the path to a meaningful career and to financial stability for herself and her family. Sadly, many first-generation students do not have the information or support they need in order to go to college and thrive. Without supporters like you, Dami’s story could have been one of lost opportunities, but with your help she achieved a big dream!
“Like all immigrant parents, my dad wanted his children to achieve all the things he couldn’t do so we could have a better life and become something of ourselves. My parents gave me the foundation to dream successfully and with that, I remember that I have the strength, patience, and passion to reach for the stars and change the world.”
With your support, Dami is now a graduate from the University of Rhode Island with a major in Psychology and a concentration in Neuropsychology! She will also be pursuing her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology!
There are so many students across Rhode Island with similar stories to Dami. By supporting College Visions, you are giving students like Dami a chance. You are challenging the troubling fact that only 38% of low-income RI students graduate from college within 6 years. Your gift allows students to truly be the authors of their own stories and to transform families and communities. Thanks to friends and supporters like you, 66% of CV students earn a degree with 6 years!
We hope you will consider giving to College Visions by June 30th. When you give, you help young people achieve their dreams and you invest in the transformative power of education!
With many thanks,
Your College Visions Family
