Back-to-School with Afolabi Abayomi

“I am most looking forward to getting help concerning my college process from CV. Being a first-generation student makes things more difficult for me. But, because of my determination to make it to college, willingness to succeed and CV, I’ll get to where I want and need to be.”

– Afolabi, Shea High School ’17

Students are heading back to school. For some this is a happy time where they get to spend another year learning alongside their best friends. But for other students, this year will bring added pressure of overcoming challenges, persistence, and resilience as they gear up for the many stages of the college admissions process. Students like Afolabi get assistance because you continue to support College Visions! With your help, Afolabi will actualize his goals of majoring in Computer Engineering and having a positive impact on the field of technology. Read more of his interview below:

Meet 2017 College Grad: Kamah Saygbe

Many first-generation, low-income students don’t have the support or access to the resources they need to persist through college. They aren’t as fortunate as some to have parents or familial role models who understand and can navigate through the college admissions process. This is where College Visions (CV) steps in. We guide students not only through the college admissions process, but through to college graduation. And because of your support, 65% of students earn their bachelor’s degree within 6 years–more than 3 times the national average for first-generation, low-income students. Our alumni community has grown to 250 students and Kamah is one of them! Read her interview below:

DONOR PROFILE WITH JORI KETTEN

“Good learning environments teach you how to think critically – how to question, how to seek understanding, how to look at something from multiple perspectives, how to put things in context. Look at the political and social challenges we are facing right now and how many of them can be connected to lack of education. Education is important to individuals and to communities.”

Jori is a woman of many talents. She is the Assistant Director of Academic Programs with a focus on engaged scholarship at the Sweater Center for Public Service at Brown University, runs the community arts space 186 Carpenter, teaches at the RISD Museum, plays bass drum, and is a board member at Community MusicWorks! Read her interview below!
