Nick’s Corner: Success Through The Stress

March 19, 2018

These last few months our College Visions high school students and staff have been working diligently to complete all the final components of applying to college. Our current college students have been working hard all semester as they continue on their journey towards attaining their college degree. I admire the level of commitment from the CV staff to our students and to the mission of our organization.

These last few months have been challenging in the world of education. If implemented, national policy proposals would impact how students borrow to fund college tuition. And, there has been an increased level of hate speech on college campuses. Many schools are scrambling to ensure first amendment rights are protected and just as importantly students are kept safe during these encounters.

By now you are aware of the tragedy in Parkland, Florida and other places around the country. These and other issues can be daunting for our students and for CV staff. However, CV has been successful largely due to the ability to build thoughtful and open relationships with students, which means that we can stay focused on our mission of college access and success. We are here for discussions with students regarding any anxiety they may be experiencing given current day events. We encourage students to find their voice, using it in a way that will create positive change not only for themselves but for others. A perfect example of this is a story that was published in the Washington Post about a student who spoke up about housing issues on campus. This student could have just advocated for her own situation but instead became an advocate for other students on her campus who were facing the same issue. I proudly say that this student is a part of the CV family and is in our College Success Program.

I share this information because we know that our actions at the local level occur within a broader national context. This is what CV is about, we empower first-generation youth to strive for greatness. Every moment of challenge is also a moment of opportunity to create positive change. Our CV family also includes those who support our work and see a value in making this world a better place for all. Yes, national affairs may create some anxiety, but we continue to move forward together as CV family.
